Newark’s mayor: Non-law enforcement people helped us reduce crime | Opinion

Mayors from around the country gathered in Newark in February to discuss violence prevention and community-based changes in the public safety ecosystem, to exchange ideas and to find tangible solutions for the national problem of violence in our towns and cities.

In the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder and calls for action in how our cities are policed, the National League of Cities set up a task force to “reimagine public safety,” Mayor David Holt of Oklahoma City and I co-chair the group of 23 mayors and council members from cities as large as Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., to cities as small as Ridgeland, Miss., and Centerville, Minn.
