Mayor Baraka: Newark has its own plans to help the unhoused | Opinion

Five months ago, the New Jersey Department Community of Affairs released a report crediting the city of Newark with a nearly 60 percent reduction of street homelessness.

This is important to remember, especially now, as the U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments on whether to allow or ban “public camping” when shelter cannot be provided for people living on the streets.

This stems from a ruling by U.S. 9th Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco that said bans on camping on public streets or parks violated the Eighth Amendment, which protects citizens from cruel and unusual punishment.
